Accessibility Tools

It’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2024 and we wanted to share some of our best tips to make accessibility easier for all when using popular systems!

Before we get started, make sure to check out our website’s accessibility tools in the bottom right-hand corner to make reading this blog easier for you as necessary!

Windows:

Did you know about the ‘Ease of Access’ settings in Windows? From there, you can adjust a wide variety of settings to suit your needs. Let’s go through together how we can do this.

First, select the Windows button in the bottom left-hand corner.

Then, select settings.

Once settings opens up, select ease of access.

This then takes you to the menu where you can adjust all the settings to suit your needs.

In this menu, you can adjust the following settings:

  • Make text bigger
  • Make everything bigger (changes app size and text on display)
  • Change the size and colour of the cursor and mouse pointer
  • Make everything brighter or use night light
  • Turn on high contrast
  • Use colour filters (also has the option to add a shortcut key to toggle the filter on and off)

There are many other systems that offer accessibility too! Check out the below.

Microsoft Teams:

  • Prioritise signers on screen in meetings
  • Add captions
  • Change chat density
  • Change theme – default, dark, high contrast

Microsoft Word:

  • Read mode
  • Immersive reader options – change focus, page colour, text and line spacing, read aloud

Outlook:

  • Immersive reader options
  • Change layout options

 OneNote:

  • Immersive reader options
  • Page colour options
  • Rule line options – thinner, thicker, grids, etc.

For more Microsoft accessibility information, check out their website by clicking the following button:

Google Chrome:

  • Add live captions for audio and video (can customise size and style)
  • Navigate pages with text cursor
  • Swipe between pages
  • Options to add other extensions such as read aloud, google translate, OpenDyslexic, screen shader, and so many more!

We hope you have found these tips helpful! Let us know in the comments if you have tried these before and if they’re helpful to you. Tell us if there are any tips we have missed! We are always working hard to find ways in which we can support our apprentices in the best way possible.
