Michelle’s HR Apprenticeship Journey

My name is Michelle and I am currently employed as an Assistant HR Business Partner at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn.  I have recently completed a Level 5 HR Consultant/Partner Apprenticeship.

        What does your role involve?

My role includes providing general HR advice to senior managers and medical staff, ensuring this aligns with the Trust’s polices and procedures. I also provide HR representation and support to senior management during employee relation meetings.

What was the apprenticeship process like?

I have previously completed two apprenticeships, one of those was with Blue Sky, so it was reassuring to know that I would be fully supported in my apprenticeship journey. I felt in control of my learning as I was able to choose the units that I had an interest in and also set a timeframe for completion. I had regular contact with Kate, who was fundamental in helping me achieve my targets and gave me the encouragement I needed.

What is the best thing you’ve learnt?

I feel I have built upon my core knowledge and understanding of human resources since completing the apprenticeship, which has increased my confidence when providing advice to senior managers. I found it really beneficial attending the cohort meetings and sharing best practice with my peers.

What are you most proud about?

At times it felt that I was never going to finish my apprenticeship and work commitments/family life, along with a global pandemic (with an increase in work and working from home) made it seem impossible. However, I did complete the apprenticeship and I could not have done it without the support and encouragement from Blue Sky.

What would your advice be for those considering an apprenticeship?

For those considering an apprenticeship, it is a flexible way of learning whilst working but you do need to be self-motivated and strict with yourself. Being organised and setting yourself targets is also helpful, however you have the full support from Blue Sky to guide you. I have now completed three apprenticeships and would not hesitate in completing a fourth!

What are your next learning steps?

I am excited to put my learning into practice within my current role and in the future would like to complete a higher level apprenticeship in human resources/ business management.

I really cannot thank all the staff at Blue Sky enough for their support over the last two years.
